How it behaves

Mango butter sits between shea and cocoa in firmness: softer and easier to work than cocoa butter, firmer than shea, and noticeably less greasy on the skin than either. It is also close to odourless, so unlike cocoa butter it will not colour the scent of a blend — which makes it the easier of the two to build a fragranced product around.

Working with it

Melt gently over low heat or in a double boiler, then cool quickly once melted — overheating and slow cooling is what turns a butter grainy. Many cold process soap recipes use it at around 5–15% of the oil weight, while whipped body butters often run much higher.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight with the container sealed. Both butters soften in warm weather; if one melts and resets it is still perfectly usable, though the texture may turn grainy.
